Information About CA-MRSA

Charleston - 20 October 2007 — CA-MRSA has been in the national and local news. As you are aware, it has unfortunately become a common skin infection in communities throughout the United States including West Virginia. In this recent time of heightened awareness to CA-MRSA, please follow the guidelines prepared by the WVDHHR, BPH - Infectious Disease and Epidemiology Program. The links to this information are on our web site at or go directly to the BPH web site.

Read the newly developed “Fact Sheet for Schools and Parents.” It is also available at the above web links.

Please note:

Schools do not need to be closed to control the spread of MRSA!
Routine daily cleaning according to usual procedures and “as-needed” cleaning of common areas shared by students is sufficient.
Hand washing is the key to prevent the spread of any bacteria, virus, etc.
Please contact your school nurse who will work closely with the local health department, for guidance in MRSA situations / outbreaks and assistance with educating school personnel, students, parents and the community.
