The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) hosted nearly 300 students at the 2024 West Virginia Science and Engineering Fair (WVSEF) at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center on Monday, March 4th. Young scientists from grades 3 through 12 presented more than 200 exhibits in categories including chemistry, technology, plant science, engineering, robotics and much more.
Among those 300 students were three of our own Pendleton County representatives; 8th grader Dylan Eye, 5th grade FES student Marion Williams, and 4th grade BES student Harley Bowers. These students earned their spot at the 2024 WVSEF by earning first place at the Regional Science Fair.
The WVSEF fair provides opportunities for students to ask questions about their world and to be creative and resourceful as they contemplate problems to eventually solve. Students who participate in science fairs learn problem-solving and critical thinking skills that can be used throughout their lifetime. Scientific methodology, logical thinking, math, statistics and data analysis, as well as reading, writing, grammar, and other skills are utilized as students ask questions, research and collect data, make conclusions based on evidence and communicate their findings to others.
We want to congratulate all three of our students for their hard work and representation of Pendleton County at the state fair. The competition resulted in 145 student winners, two being our very own Dylan Eye and Marion Williams. Dylan earned 2nd place in Division II, Material Science with his project, Are You a Bethiever? While Marion earned 3rd place in Division I, Behavioral and Social Sciences with her project, Taste the Rainbow.
A complete list of winners is available on the WVDE website.
